The Real Admission Pathway: CAT, Not Cash
IIFT Delhi admits students to its full-time MBA programmes exclusively through CAT scores, having discontinued its own separate entrance examination starting with the 2024–25 batch. The final selection weighs the CAT 2025 score at 45% of the composite, alongside performance in the subsequent rounds. This is a three-stage funnel, and every stage is merit-based and category-transparent.
Stage 1 — CAT Score & Shortlisting
Stage 1 shortlisting runs on a 100-point scale built from three components: normalized CAT score, a work-experience rating, and academic performance. The CAT score itself is normalized against the highest score achieved in that year’s exam — for instance, if the maximum score was 300 and a candidate scored 270, the normalized shortlisting figure works out to (270 ÷ 300) × 90, or 81 points. Sectional cutoffs across Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning must all be cleared independently — a candidate sitting at 98 overall percentile but only 50 percentile in one section will typically not clear shortlisting.
Stage 2 — Essay, Group Discussion, Extempore & Personal Interview
Shortlisted candidates move to essay writing, an extempore round, and a personal interview, historically held in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and Mumbai, though recent cycles have shifted this round online. The essay-writing exercise places candidates in groups of eight, gives the group one topic, five minutes to think, and fifteen minutes to write — an assessment of structured reasoning under a hard time constraint, not of pedigree or payment capacity.
Stage 2 evaluates work experience more rigorously than Stage 1: a rating score derived from the same bell-curve model is combined with a panel-assigned score out of 10 based on role, learning, and relevance, and the final work-experience score is calculated as (Rating Score × Panel Score) ÷ 10. Only experience at recognised organisations — private or limited companies, government bodies, PSUs, or registered partnerships — is counted at all.
Stage 3 — Final Composite Merit
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration from a recognised university, with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks for General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates and 45% for SC/ST/PwD candidates; final-year students may apply, provided proof of the qualifying degree is submitted by 31 October of the admission year, failing which the admission is automatically cancelled. The application fee is ₹3,000 for General/EWS/OBC candidates and ₹1,500 for SC/ST candidates, and reservation provisions strictly follow Government of India guidelines for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD categories.
